The AI in DW:U in general is quite good, especially with the AI improvement mod of icemania! definitely better than galciv3! planetary buildings are nice and all but tell me how good you find the feature / how often you really use it if you have a massive sized galaxy and several DOZENS of planets? most people would cry for a planetary governor at that point! The size of the maps are only limited by your computer's hardware, and if you wanna build a battleship the size of a sun, there's nothing stopping you.Īre you sure you played the current distant worlds universe release?ĭW:U has a bunch of buildings, mostly wonders or super constructions. It completely breaks the mold set by its predecessors and has literally infinite scope.

I find the diplomatic AI in DW:U arbitrary and rather brain dead at times.Įdit: If you're looking for a good Space 4x, check out Star Ruler 2. Gal Civ's "rock paper scissors" weapon\armor mechanic and limited choice of components just doesn't scratch the itch like DW:U. You can custom tailor your ships any way you see fit, build a fuckzillion of them to smash your enemies, and the game makes it easy to marshall fleets of that size. Where DW:U shines however is the ship design and combat. Exploiting your holdings usually boils down to "eliminate taxes until population is maxed out, then jack them through the roof".

I like having more choice about how I develop my planets, but DW:U has a "civilian economy" that does 90 percent of the legwork automatically (even if you have full manual controls enabled) and there aren't a lot of buildings or ways to specialize your planets. However, the economic model is abstract and mostly hands off. I haven't played Gal Civ 3, but assuming it's a lot like Gal Civ 2, I have both Gal Civ 2 and DW:U and if I had to pick one I'd pick Gal Civ every time.ĭW:U has massive scope and near infinite customization that allows you to play just about any kind of game you want.
